Cd ReplicationCD replication refers to the standard processes used in the physical mass manufacturing of compact discs. It differs from simply duplicating or burning CDs in the processes and types of CDs used. Duplicating or burning CDs is done using a blank CD-R that is laser burned with a simple computer and burner setup. Duplicators are just high speed burners, capable of making many copies of a CD within an hour. What is CD Replication? Conversely, CD replication is the technical term that describes the use of a glass master and a metal stamper which presses the CD from injection molded plastic pellets. The pressing embeds the CD with audio information in the form of tiny indentations. The data is then protected by layers of polycarbonate plastic. This is considered a retail-worthy product, engineered to the standards which allow them to work on all CD players. Burned CD-R versions of duplicates are not considered to be of professional value. Initial CD-R technologies frequently suffered from compatibility issues, but since that time these issues have been mostly ironed out. Why Replicate CDs? CDs are most commonly replicated in order to sell software or music. DVDs can also be replicated for movies, but the process was initially used by businesses and record companies in the production of CD products. Currently, cheaper technologies and new software programs have turned laptop computers into powerful studios, editing rooms, and mixing boards. Online CD replicators allow musicians, programmers, and filmmakers to produce their own product for sale – without ever having to leave the home. Replication or Duplication? Replicating CDs offer advantages over duplicating CDs. If you simply want to make some copies to send to friends, record labels, or production companies, then CD-Rs and duplicators are your best choice. But, if you want to be able to sell a professional level product which utilizes bar code technology, computer graphics, and retail or custom packaging, then CD or DVD replication will be a better match for your needs. CD replication offers the added advantage of being able to place silkscreened art imagery onto the CDs. Replicated CDs are also compatible with all CD players. Replication Details In the past, replication set up costs usually weren't worth runs of quantities under 500 units. Replication companies have recently become more flexible about this. As order quantities rise above 1000, costs per disc become increasingly lower. While CDs are typically delivered in spindles, you can also arrange for your product to be place in jewel cases, digipacks, retail cases, and custom jackets, depending on how you seek to market it. Replication used to take weeks to accomplish, but with today's processes you can have rush order of CDs replicated within 24 hours. Of course, you must be able to provide the master disc, materials for print, and conform to the replicator's guidelines in order to expedite the process.
