Exterior Gas Light

Exterior gas lighting has always been a part of historic cities like Charleston, South Carolina. Recently, it has been become popular in all areas of the country as a way to add historic charm and a romantic touch to both old and new residences.

Benefits of Exterior Gas Lighting

Gas lighting lends a romantic warm beautiful glow to the exterior of your home. It can highlight and enhance your home as well as its landscaping. It is also an inexpensive and efficient way to have extra light and safety to the outside of your home.

Gas lights continue to stay lit when the electricity is off. When the power is off, the outside of your home will continue to stay well lit. It does not attract insects, and is perfect for use around decks and patios or any place in your yard where you will be entertaining.

Types of Exterior Gas Lighting

You can purchase standard gas lighting or customized gas lighting. The most common forms exterior gas lighting comes in are:

  • Wall mount – Wall mount gas lighting is attached directly to the exterior wall of your home where a gas line has been run.

  • Hanging – Hanging exterior gas lights are hung from a decorative bracket on the outside of your home.

  • Post mount – Post mount exterior gas lighting is attached to the top of a lamppost. The gas line is run underneath the ground.

  • Patio torches – Placed around your deck or patio, these torches never burn out. They also do not attract bugs.

  • Portable – Portable exterior gas lighting works off of propane tanks. They are used when gas lighting is desired, but there is not a dedicated gas line available for the lights. They can be used around patios and decks, gardens, or on camping trips.

Tips for Choosing Exterior Gas Lighting

For the longest lasting, most efficient gas lighting, chose newly-made fixtures. They are often designed to look like antiques, but their finish will last longer. However, if you find authentic antique exterior gas lighting fixtures, they may be usable. Many shops will refurbish them. If you find antique electrical lighting fixtures that you love, they may also be convertible into gas lighting fixtures. A place that does custom manufacturing of exterior gas lighting fixtures may be able to convert them for you.

Finally, for modern convenience, choose exterior gas lighting that can be lit by an automatic electric ignition system. Just flip a switch inside the home and the exterior gas lights ignite. If they are blown out by severe weather, the automatic electric ignition system will relight them.
