Fitness Equipment

With health and fitness awareness on the rise, so are gym memberships. Oftentimes, it may make more sense financially to purchase fitness equipment for home use. This can be especially true if busy schedules and multi-task days leave little or no room to drive to a gym. The equipment is therefore available to an individual whenever they find the time.

Home fitness equipment can be:

  • A stationary bike

  • A treadmill

  • A stair climber

  • An elliptical machine

  • An entire home weight system.

  • The equipment can be utilized 30 minutes a day while dinner is in the oven, before breakfast is on the table, during a favorite television program, or whenever is convenient.

Beginning the Search for Fitness Equipment

When seeking to compare and purchase fitness equipment, online fitness stores may be a good place to start. At times, they may be able to offer lower sales prices, as they aren't contending with the cost of having to run a physical store with employee salaries and building costs. Be aware that many sites may offer slightly used equipment at even lower prices, and can be a thrifty purchase as long as the correct research has been conducted to ensure site and product quality and dependability.

    Choosing the Right Fitness Equipment

Home fitness equipment can be expensive, and it is worth putting effort into researching before buying. Begin by with setting realistic fitness goals. Is the point to increase muscle mass, to lose weight, to train for an upcoming event, or to improve overall health? Once these questions have been answered, it's easier to focus on a particular machine.

For example, treadmills are good for aerobic activity, and a treadmill set at an incline can burn twice as many calories than working out on a level surface. However, running can be jarring on knee and ankle joints and may not be a wise purchase for those needing a lower impact form of exercise.

There are several models of home gym configurations that offer a lower impact workout through weight resistance and strength training and are not as aerobic as biking, running, or stair climbing. However, as muscles increase metabolism, the more muscle mass, the more calories are burned.

An elliptical machine is like a cross between a treadmill and a stair climber and it promotes smooth motion and lower impact on joints, therefore toning muscle as well as providing an aerobic workout simultaneously.

Stationary bicycles are similar to elliptical machines as they offer smoother, lower impact exercise as well as an excellent cardio workout, yet are generally unable to fully utilize and engage upper body muscles.

    Be Realistic

The important thing to remember when beginning a workout regiment at home is to purchase equipment that you know will be used. Start small, perhaps with some hand weights or videos, before dropping thousands of dollars on a new treadmill. The simplest workout plan can begin with a solid pair of walking shoes and a brisk, morning stroll.
