Home Automation Product

Home automation is a growing field that includes everything from remote controls for the TV to phone calls from your house if something is wrong. Because of the increasing availability and lowering costs of technology, many new homes are built with extensive home automation applications, and many existing homes are being outfitted with them as well. Whether you are interested in saving money, feeling safer, or you just like fun gadgets, you can benefit from home automation.

Applications

Home automation is a very broad term. The most basic way to think of it is in terms of remote controls. However, instead of just using them for the television, you can use them to control the temperature in your house (even when you're away), when the blinds open and close, when your lights dim and turn off, when your sprinklers run, when your door unlocks, and more. Depending on the way you setup your system, this can be done in the same room, on an automatic timer schedule, or even from anywhere in the world through the Internet.

How Does It Work?

Home automation systems can work in a variety of ways. The most popular form of control is called X-10. Most home automation appliances are designed to be compatible with this type of control. X-10 can be implemented in one of three ways. It can be wired into the existing electrical structure of the house; this won't create any extra wires or cables, nor interfere with any of the other appliances or electrical functions of your house. It can also be controlled using infrared or radio waves. Because X-10 is the industry standard, it is best to choose appliances and models that utilize this. X-10 is also easier to fit into existing homes.

After you have everything fitted, it is up to you how things are controlled. Shop around and do your research. Decide whether having remote control type access, Internet access, or another type altogether best fits your needs.

Benefits

Not only does home automation make life easier, it can also save you money and keep you and your family safer. By dimming lights and programming them when to turn off and on, you can save on electric bills. Controlling the heating precisely from room to room can lower your gas bills. Sprinklers and lights can be programmed to be motion sensitive, going off when there is movement that there shouldn't be. Your home can even be programmed to contact you if there is a problem—everything from a fire or break-in to the temperature going too low.

Besides all of its practical benefits, home automation is fun. You can have a stereo wired into every room of the house and control it at the touch of a button. It is even possible to have your favorite show pop up automatically on the right channel. Whether you outfit your entire house or just a few select areas of it, home automation is a good and increasingly standard choice.
