Home Organization

Home organization is a hot topic. If you would like your home to be a bit more organized, the following article offers tips to get you started.

Start Small

One of the most important tips in home organization is to start small. Setting out to organize your entire home in one weekend is tantamount to setting yourself up for failure. Start with one closet or the drawers in one piece of furniture such as your dining room buffet.

Remove every item from your chosen small project, and sort them into four piles, including:

1. Items that should be kept and put back where they were found.
2. Items that should be kept but put somewhere else in the house.
3. Items that should be given away or donated.
4. Items that should be thrown away.

Before replacing items in the closet or drawers, purchase any home organization products that can help you stay organized. For a bathroom closet, shelf dividers can be purchased to separate towels and keep them in neat piles. Baskets can also be purchased to hold small items and keep them from getting shoved to the back of the closet.

Tackle Larger Projects with Help

Sometimes home organization requires some help. This help can come in the form of family members, friends, or professional organizational companies. If you are trying to tackle an entire room in one day, recruit someone to help you. If possible, move everything into a separate room and sort the items into the four piles mentioned above.

Having someone to help you will make the task less daunting. That person may also be able to help you decide which things should stay, and which should go. Sometimes a professional organization like a closet company, or even a professional organizer, may be advisable. After all, relying on professionals can save you time.

Home Organization Products

Home organization products can be bought anywhere from the grocery store to stores that specialize in organizational products. Before going out and purchasing products, stop and think about what is really needed.

Complete the four step sorting process before buying products for home organization. You may find you don't need to buy as much as you originally thought.

Think about how products will be used and who will be using them. A storage bench may be a good idea in a mudroom, but perhaps a storage bench with cubbies and baskets may get your kids to put their hats and gloves away more easily than one with a lid that lifts. Home organization products are only good if they actually get used.
