Installing Vertical Blinds

Window treatments are available in what can appear to be a bewildering array of choices. Vertical blinds are popular because they can add privacy and are fairly easy to install.

Why Vertical Blinds?

In addition to privacy, vertical blinds offer an appealing tailored appearance, light control, glare and sun control, and insulating value. They're easy to operate and available in a variety of styles and colors. While most commonly made of fabric, aluminum, or PVC plastic, they are also available in fabric and wood. Vertical blinds must be custom made to fit your windows. They can be mounted on the wall or within the window casement. With blinds installed on the wall, you'll be able to move them completely away from window so that they don't obstruct the view.

How To Install

You will need a measuring tape, a drill with assorted drill bits, a Phillips driver bit, a Phillips-head screwdriver, and safety glasses. If performing the installation yourself:

1. Remove any existing window treatments, valances, and mounting hardware.
2. Clean the area thoroughly.
3. Measure and mark a point on the wall at a height that will allow the blinds to hang 1/2" off the floor.
4. Screw "L" brackets to the wall every 30" at the appropriate height.
5. Snap the vertical blind track onto the brackets.
6. Snap the slats onto the carriers on the track, and let them hang freely.

The blinds are operated by 2 cords. One cord opens and closes the blinds. The other rotates the slats. Your local home center will also be able to supply you with a list of contractors who can perform the installation for you.

Cleaning Your Vertical Blinds

Vinyl and aluminum blinds are usually the easiest to maintain. They can be cleaned by hanging them on a clothesline and spraying them with a garden hose. Vacuum blinds often with the brush attachment. Use a lamb's wool duster, working across the slats and starting at the top; do not use plastic dusters. When dusting or vacuuming vertical blinds, brush downward only, as the slats often become unhooked if you brush upward. For spot cleaning, spray an all-purpose cleaner onto a clean, dry cloth and wipe the soiled area on the blind. Never spray the cleaner directly onto the blind. The quick and easy method is to:

1. Take the blinds outside to your patio or driveway.
2. Put a few drops of soap in a bucket of water.
3. Wet the brush and brush the blinds from side to side.
4. Turn the blinds over. Brush the other side.
5. Rinse the blinds gently with the garden hose while tilting the blinds.
6. To prevent water spots, quickly run your finger down the slats a couple of times to remove excess water.
7. Drape the blinds over a fence or couch to dry.
