Low Voltage Outdoor Lights

Low voltage outdoor lights have two primary functions: to accent landscaping and protect home security. To light dark walkways, steps and paths, low voltage outdoor lights are the perfect alternative to high voltage lighting that may be too bright at night, attract more bugs and pests, and create odd shadows. Low voltage outdoor lights may be positioned to highlight plants, artwork, gardens, trees and other landscaping features.

Advantages

There are many advantages to using low voltage lights over other types or outdoor lights.
Low voltage outdoor lights are simple to install and the cables can be underground, in a ditch or run through a grommet. Low voltage outdoor lights are flexible and easy to adjust or move around. Because low voltage lights operate with low voltage and amps if they are accidently severed there is virtual no risk of shock. Low voltage outdoor lights are subtle and soft, which decreases the "glare" commonly seen in landscapes with brighter lights.

Purchase and Installation

To create the perfect illuminated landscape, start by choosing high quality outdoor lighting, fixtures, or systems. Higher quality lighting features superior components, which means they cost much more to make. Although the price tag may be a little higher, it is well worth it. As a general rule of thumb, choose bulbs based on brands and names you trust. Many lower quality light bulbs burn out faster, requiring you to replace them more often. You'll end up spending more in the long run on replacements.

Low voltage outdoor lighting is available in kits or as individual fixtures. Most kits include the following: a transformer, lights and mounting posts, connectors, and power cables. The tools needed for installation include a wire stripper, screw driver, wire nuts, silicone, spade, and sealant. If you don't already have one, a weather-proof outlet cover is needed as well.

There are several types of lights available for your arrangement. Pan lights are used for walkways, while cone lights may also be used for walkways and to highlight surrounding plants. Spotlights are usually tree-mounted in order to project a "moonlit" look, while pond lights are used to highlight pools and fountains. Flood lights can be used to illuminate trees, elements of the structure, or other large objects.

For most, outdoor lights are considered more attractive (and neighbor-friendly) as accents, so avoid the "stadium lighting" look by spacing them accordingly.

Low voltage outdoor lighting kits and fixtures may be purchased online from a variety of electrical distributors, lighting showrooms, online home centers, hardware stores, and mass merchandisers.
