Organize Closet

A closet is a storage space that takes the form of a large cabinet or recessed area used for storing clothes or linens. For some, closets in the home or apartment may not be large at all. For others, a closet may be used to store everything but clothes and linens. In many cases, closets are used to store equipment, books, documents, old clothes, toys, old furnishings, and more. These items may be packed into closets in an unorganized manner, making it difficult to access items you really need.

There are a variety of different tools that may be utilized to help organize closets better, adding space, saving time, and offering easier access to everyday items.

Closet Organization Tools

Before you start organizing, it is best to go through your closets and get rid of anything you don't need. It's probably a good idea to remove these items from the home immediately to avoid second guessing and long good-byes.

There are many different storage items that may be used to help organize your closet. Try using shoe bags, hanging shelves, boxes, and storage bins. Other small but useful tools include sturdy plastic hangers and vertical skirt/pant hangers that each hold 5 to 6 articles.

Organization

If there are any items you do not use on a regular basis, they should be stored in bins, on high shelves, or in the back of the closet. These may be items that are worn or used on special occasions. Collapsible plastic or canvas storage bags, boxes and bins should be used because they are easier to squeeze into small spaces than hard plastic or other hard materials. After all of these items are properly stored, begin organizing every day items such as shoes, scarves, ties, books, purses, and briefcases. Hanging shelves fit in almost any closet, and may be used for sweaters, scarves, and other light items. In addition to holding shoes, hanging shoe bags may also be used for light items such as scarves and belts. To save hanging space, skirts and pants may be stored on hangers that hold 5 to 6 items. For other articles, plastic or wood hangers will keep items sturdy and uniform.

Magazines, books and documents should be stored together. Be sure to recycle old magazine and books; the same goes for papers and documents. If you have any books left over that you use on a regular basis, add them to exterior shelves. Loose documents should be filed, if they are accessed on a regular basis. If not, store them in the basement or garage.

Purchasing Storage Accessories

A great place to shop for storage tools is online. You can browse through hundreds of items in all shapes, sizes, and makes from a variety of retailers, distributors, and manufacturers.
