Pool Floats

When using a swimming pool, there are a variety of games, tools, and pool floats available for optimum recreation and relaxation.

Pool Float Designs

Pool floats are generally constructed of foam or plastic and can be designed as a floating mat or tubes that will keep swimmers buoyant. Water wings, or pieces of inflatable plastic worn around the upper arms to promote buoyancy, are also considered types of pool floats. Mats may have an elevated headpiece or padded headrest and keep the entire body above the water line, while tubes can be bent and manipulated to keep the upper body above the water and the legs paddling below.

Pool floats may even be constructed with arm rests and holders for drinks, sunglasses, and even reading material. Floats may be decorated with designs and tropical motifs, favorite sports team's insignias, or even designed to look like an animal for the enjoyment of children.

Pool Float Maintenance

Floats should be maintained and cleaned to elongate their life. Be sure to remove floats from water when not in use and place them in a shady area to prevent constant sun exposure. Spray floats down with a garden hose before storing, and be sure to store them in a cool, dry environment such as in a pool shed or beneath a patio overnight.

Pool Float Safety

Pool floats can be fun accessories as well as provide an opportunity for relaxation. However, recreational floats are not intended to be safety or rescue devices, and will not be able to withstand roughhousing or other constant abuse. In fact, concerns with floats, such as water wings, have risen, as at times the plastic seams become separated and the floats fall apart.

If a device appears to resemble a float, but is actually a safety device, it should be designated as such. Mount safety floats along the fence surrounding a pool for easy access, and instruct pool visitors on their strict purpose. Inflatable floats such as mattresses, wings, and tubes are NOT lifesaving devices and should only be used as toys.

Purchasing Pool Floats

To purchase pool floats, take a look around stores before heading to the pool specialty store. There may be cheaper options available at department stores that may not withstand the winter months, but will last through the summer without breaking the bank. For the more sturdy floats, or those that provide fun amenities and components, pay a visit to the pool store and don't be afraid to splurge on floats with headrests and cup holders!
