Skylight Shades

Skylight shades are used in residential, commercial, and industrial environments to help reduce heating costs in the winter and air conditioning costs during the summer as well as to provide protection from the sun. Windows in a typical home can account for at least 10 to 25 percent of the heating bill. But keep in mind: heat rises and escapes through uncovered skylights in the winter, while intense heat can bear down and overpower air conditioning in the summer. While skylights can be a beautiful addition to any home, the ability to control them makes the idea of having them even more appealing. Skylight shades give the homeowner control over how much sun/heat enters the home, when and for how long, while conserving energy and dramatically reducing heating and cooling costs.

Types of Skylight Shades

Skylight shades can be manual, motorized, automated, or computerized. Manual skylight shades are tension shades that can be operated at many different angles. They may be operated with a telescopic pole or a handle attached to a travel rail. Motorized skylight shades make it easier to take control. They are generally used for skylights that are in difficult-to-reach places, and help eliminate the need to fuss with manual functioning. Motorized skylight shades may be powered by battery, a low-voltage power supply, or solar energy. Automated and computerized skylight shades are generally used in commercial or industrial environments where sun, light, and heat control is of the utmost importance to protecting equipment, production, and the working environment.

Balcony skylight shades and exterior skylight covers may be mounted over the skylight outside of the home. These covers still allow light to flow through and may be used for clear, bronze, or frosted skylights. They generally block up to 80 percent of heat. Exterior skylights are generally made of flame retardant, mildew- and fade-resistant vinyl.

Configurations may include, but are not limited to, flat, soft-fold, accordion-pleated, top-down, and bottom-up configurations. Also available are sloping bottom-up, rectangular, horizontal and triangular configurations.
