Tile Roof Repair

Tile roofs last longer and require less maintenance than most other roofing materials. When repairs are necessary, the biggest problem is that you can very easily crack more tiles by walking on the roof -- so be careful.

About Tile Roofs

The traditional tile roof is an architectural feature deserving of special attention. Texture, color, and play of light and shadow impart a distinctive character to a building that no other roof type can match. If your tile roof needs repair, make sure you find a contractor with the competence to repair a tile roof. Consult with the contractor to ensure he or she can complete the correct match of color, size and shape.

Easy Does It

Replacing broken tiles on your roof is fairly easy using the following method. To complete the repairs, you will need 2 flat bars (pry bars) and replacement tiles. First, slide the pry bar under the top right tile and above the tile that is going to be replaced. Make sure the bar is pointed so that both of the tiles above the broken one are elevated. Be gentle with the tiles. Next, slide a second flat bar under the tile located left of the tile you want to replace. The broken tile can now be removed, since the surrounding tiles are no longer resting on the broken tile. Most tile roofs are not nailed down. Instead, the tiles have nubs that rest behind the small boards running horizontally under the tiles. This means you'll need to lift up the back end of the tile in order to slide it out.

Before You Repair

A tile roof is not the type of roof you should just leave and forget. It's important that it remain mold and mildew free. Don't wait until it's blackened and then clean it, as this will damage your roof by breaking down the integrity of the tile. Tiles can be beautiful for year after year, if properly maintained.
