Emergency Lighting

Emergency lighting can save lives. Emergency lighting is required by many national, state and local building codes including the National Electrical Code, National Fire Protection Association's Life Safety Code and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA). These codes require commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings have reliable and sufficient emergency lighting.

Emergency lighting is used to direct people in the event of a building evacuation. When evacuating, the stairs, aisles, hallways, and corridors must be light for 90 minutes and the lights must work as a guide in order to lead all people out of the building. A failure to have adequate emergency lighting could result in absolute chaos, multiple injuries and even death.

The most common emergency lighting is "exit" signs. These signs direct people to the nearest safe exit. In case of an electrical failure, emergency lights are generated by battery power.
